Banner Oracle Linux 8 Upgrade - Architecting and implementing a large-scale upgrade
Phil Vecchione, SUNY ITEC
Gaymarie Rodriguez, SUNY ITEC

The Banner student information system is a vital component of many college campuses providing functions such as scheduling, grades, and financial aid. To keep current with the vendor's requirements all Banner systems need to be upgraded to Oracle Linux 8 by the end of 2024 or they may not be able to receive upcoming patches. Upgrading one Banner system can be daunting, upgrading 39, complete with all new servers, is a magnitude more complicated. This presentation will discuss designing a path for upgrading environments and managing a year of continuous upgrades.

Phil has been an IT project manager for over 14 years, with a focus on IT Infrastructure. He works at SUNY ITEC, a managed service provider for the State University of New York, providing services for nearly all 64 campuses. He is also a member of the ITEC PMO. Outside of work, Phil is a writer and podcaster, an avid reader, and a pretty good cook and baker.

Gaymarie Rodriguez has been a DBA with SUNY ITEC for 17 yrs. Starting in 1993, her Oracle expertise has evolved from forms and reports development, Oracle Apps administration and lastly DBA. Gaymarie serves on the board of the Upstate NY Oracle User Group and is active with Women in Technology. Seeing firsthand the decline of female student enrollment in technology, Gaymarie hopes to mentor and encourage young women to follow a path in computing.
