Senior Database Engineer
Behind every great on-line eCommerce site and technology service is an equally great database.  These databases provide mission critical data processing services and it takes highly skilled DBA’s to build and maintain these systems.  To meet the challenges of our fast growing business products and services lines, we need to grow our DBA team.  We’re looking for exceptional DBA’s who are interested in using the latest database technologies to deliver industry leading systems, with results that go directly to the bottom line.

Thomson Reuters is a leading provider of integrated information solutions to legal, tax, accounting, intellectual property, compliance, business and government professionals around the world.  The technology organization within Thomson is a centralized unit providing shared software and services to Thomson business units across the globe.  

We are looking to add a Senior Database Engineer to our database team.  This team primarily supports large content publishing database systems that provide the source of legal information for many of our corporate publishing applications.  These systems use Oracle database software running primarily on Linux.  We also support systems running on Solaris and AIX.  

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Technology (70%)
Perform Oracle Systems Database Administration across multiple Oracle database environments and ensure continuous 24x7 operation and availability in support of mission critical internal production applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Strong operational familiarity with Oracle RAC and Oracle DataGuard architecture on Oracle 10g
- Perform various project related database requests for customers.  Tasks can include DDL generation, cloning, schema and/or table level data refreshes, performance tuning.
- Work with development teams or development DBA’s to review new databases changes or designs.
- Propose and develop strategic database improvements in technical areas of database implementation, automated monitoring, support and enhancement
- Contribute/write/maintain OS level scripts (i.e., UNIX shell) for system DB maintenance
- Ensure the quality and consistency of data and database systems by following a defined set of procedures (change control, security procedures, user passwords, backups, etc)
- Contribute to the continued development and documentation of operational and  application related database standards and procedures
- Maintain sound backup and error recovery procedures by participating in periodic backup audits, ensuring all databases are being backed-up
- Assess and identify database server resource requirements
- Review performance stats and recommend changes for tuning database, server, and storage configurations, as well as application SQL
- Assume ownership of database related problems; pursue problem resolution and root cause analysis
- Coordinate interaction with vendors/Oracle support in critical database problem situations
- Work with cross project teams to resolve technical performance issues/bottlenecks (e.g., network, storage, application).
- Work with development teams to coordinate and promote new versions of Oracle RDBMS, new installations, upgrades and patches
- Participate with DBA team on a weekly on-call 24x7 pager rotation schedule.  DBA on call work may also include performing scheduled off-hour maintenance operations as well as dealing with after hours troubleshooting

Management & Administration (5%)
- Ability to contribute, influence and direct a variety of projects concurrently
- Set individual goals that are consistent with business goals
- Participate in initiatives to define, measure, and report on application quality and stability
Business Acumen and Strategy (5%)
- Has broad knowledge of West/TLR products
- Proactively generates relevant ideas for new and improved use of technology
- Understands the impact of new projects and technical impacts to supported systems
- Collaborates with peers, architects and managers to determine project strategy and how best to implement/support it

QUALIFICATIONS/ WORK EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree — Computer Science, technical or engineering degree preferred
- Preferable 5+ years in a development or support organization supporting large applications with Oracle on Unix platforms
- Expert in Oracle 10g RDBMS; experience in a 24x7 high availability environment
- Basic data modeling
- Experience with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)
- Experience with Disaster Recovery implementation and testing using DataGuard or other DR replication tools
- Strong familiarity and analytical skills utilizing OEM
- Strong backup and recovery skills utilizing Oracle’s RMAN utility or Network Appliance Snapshot Technology
- Strong database performance tuning and trouble shooting skills
- Strong LINUX and/or UNIX experience (scripting experience/knowledge a big plus)
- Strong quantitative, analytical, communication and verbal skills with a strong customer service focus
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently toward assigned goals
