Functional Title:  DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR
Classification Title:  Analyst/Programmer Senior (G54)

General Purpose:

Under general guidance, provides technical expertise in the design, implementation, maintenance and support of database management systems (DBMSs) and applications that support university-wide business applications.  

Specific  Responsibilities:

Under general guidance with latitude for judgment and initiative:
• Installs, maintains, and upgrades database software.
• Maintains development, test, and production DBMS environments.
• Monitors and manages database backups, logs, and journals and restores or recovers data as required.  
• Design, develops and maintains high availability and disaster recovery strategies for database environments.
• Monitors and maintains database security.
• Monitors databases to optimize database performance, resource use, and physical implementations of databases; addresses a variety of database integration issues including migration between disparate databases, integration, maintenance/conversion, capacity planning issues, and new applications.
• Designs and develops databases in conjunction with application development teams.  
• Provides advice to applications programmers in the effective use of database languages; advises on troubleshooting, exception processing needs, and other data management issues.
• Installs, maintains and upgrades application software.
• May evaluate and recommend testing and evaluation of new procedures, software, and hardware.  
• Creates, procedures and maintains various database, application and system related documents and programs such as utility scripts, manuals and programmers handbooks.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.  
• Provides 24 hour on-call support.


REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Bachelor's degree in a related discipline with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.  
• Demonstrated proficiency in multiple DBMS environments (Oracle, Sybase on UNIX, and Microsoft SQL Server). Certification preferred.
• Experience working with a Data Warehousing and client/server/web interfaces preferred.
• Experience in programming and scripting preferred.
• Technical project and/or group leadership experience.
