Simplified SQL Tuning with Oracle Database 11g

Simplified SQL Tuning with Oracle Database 11g (and 10g)

Application SQL tuning continues to be a critical aspect of database performance tuning for many Oracle customers. Traditionally it has been a time-consuming complex task, requiring a high level of expertise in multiple domains. To address this challenge SQL Tuning Advisor and SQL Access Advisors were introduced in Oracle Database 10g. Going forward Oracle Database 11g has been even more heavily equipped with the new features such as Automatic SQL tuning and real-time SQL Monitoring that are supposed to even further automate this process. In this presentation advanced SQL tuning capabilities of Oracle Databases 10g and 11g will be discussed, going into the internals of their architecture, as well as tuning best practices.

Sergey Koltakov, Product Manager, Oracle Corporation

Sergey leads the Oracle group responsible for Database Manageability (diagnostic, tuning, change management and data masking packs), Change Assurance (Real Application Testing option) and core Enterprise Manager framework. Prior to joining Oracle Sergey was doing his doctoral studies in computer science at the near-by Stanford University.

Standardizing and Consolidating on NetApp

Post by sam »

What is this world coming to: Oracle Developers testing with LIVE Data and DBAs working 9 to 5 (and not on weekends)?

Oracle runs 80% of their business on one Storage Platform….Why???

Standardizing and consolidating on NetApp storage systems enabled Oracle to reduce IT costs and complexities resulting in $1 Billion savings.  With a total of 9.5PB on 650 NetApp storage systems worldwide, Oracle benefits from NetApp’s data management software to improve storage utilization by 50 percent, enable application availability, and skyrocket administrator productivity.

We will discuss functionality including integration with RMAN, ClusterWare (RAC), ASM, DNFS and Enterprise Manager, rapid database backups, restores and cloning, regardless of the database size, using a fraction of the storage space.

Kevin Schoener, President, Lynx Technologies Inc.

For the past eight years, Lynx has provided companies throughout New York State with Technology, Consulting, Migration and Implementation Services in the areas of:

-  Storage Architecture Optimization
-  Server and Storage Virtualization
-  Reliable Backup/Recovery Solutions
-  Business Continuity Assessments
-  Disaster Recovery Planning

The Fork-lift approach to solving IT challenges is not only costly; it often misses the mark.  Our approach is to get the maximum value out of the IT investment you’ve already made and begin to build a more robust infrastructure one brick at a time.  Often times, we can meet our customers’ IT objectives without increasing IT budgets.

Michael McGuiggan, Consulting Systems Engineer, Network Appliance

Once a member and technical co-chair of UNYOUG, Mike began developing and administering Oracle databases starting with version 5.1b for a number of companies across Upstate NY.  Mike also spent 5 years with Oracle Consulting, as a technical lead for Oracle Applications deployments at Fortune 500 companies and NYS Agencies.

For the past 8 years Mike has been a Systems Engineer for storage companies EMC and NetApp focusing on database environments.  Mike have recently moved into a consulting role with NetApp as the Northeast Region's Consulting Systems Engineer for Oracle.

Copan Systems: MAID Storage Solutions for Oracle

COPAN Systems provides a purpose built platform designed for long term and cost effective data storage.  The COPAN System storage device is massively scalable and provides a solution with a greater reliability and scalability than both traditional disk and tape based solutions.  The platform specializes in persistent (fixed content) storage for backup/recovery and archiving/historical content.  COPAN Systems integrates with many of the components of the Oracle suite of applications including Oracle Secure Backup (OSB), Recovery Manager (RMAN), and Oracle Information Lifecycle Management Assistant (ILMA).

Jay Gagne, Senior Solutions Architect, Copan Systems

Jay is a Global Senior Solutions Architect at COPAN and has over 10 years of Fortune 500 networking and storage experience.  In his last position, Jay was the Director of Global Storage at The Hartford Insurance Group, where he managed a team supporting over 2PB of disk and 4PB of tape for both Mainframe and Open Systems.  At COPAN, Jay's role is to support the sales and system engineering functions in building end-to-end solutions that can be deployed in COPAN's global marketplace.

Essentials of Test Data Management

Essentials of Test Data Management
Jon Karp, IBM

Creating realistic and consistent test databases is the first step in delivering reliable database and/or application enhancements and upgrades.  But with multiple database clones to configure and manage, your costs can quickly spiral out of control.  Testing cycles are extended, and releases are delayed.  So, how can you support rapid database and application deployment while controlling costs?   Join us for a discussion of proven test data management techniques.

Learn how organizations have reduced storage costs and sped iterative testing cycles by creating “right-sized” test environments which accurately represent the structure of relevant data models.  Hear how sites can automate the comparison of baseline data against successive test run results to quickly identify application errors.  Learn about application-aware data masking techniques that sites can leverage to de identify and protect confidential information in test databases.

Learning points:

- Streamline test data management, speed delivery of application enhancements and reduce costs
- Effectively protect confidential test data by masking personally identifying information like credit card and national identification numbers
- Find errors early in the application lifecycle, where they are cheaper and easier to fix
- Improve operational efficiencies by shortening iterative testing cycles, improving test coverage and ensuring accuracy
