VTC Migration Project Management

VTC Migration Project Management – Blending Agile and Waterfall Methodologies
Phil Vecchione, SUNY ITEC

The migration of services from the Buffalo State Data Center to the VTC Data Center requires a coordinated effort from many internal and external groups to in order to plan, provision, migrate and cut over a single service. Managing these migrations in rapid succession requires a number of tools as well as the use of both Agile and Waterfall project management. In this talk, we will show how Agile and Waterfall can work together using the VTC Banner migrations as an example. Methodologies and tools will be discussed as well as the pitfalls and triumphs that have been encountered.

Phil has been a project manager for 10 years, working in mostly small companies, in the Pharmaceutical and IT fields. Currently, he works for SUNY ITEC, a managed service provider providing hosting of Online Learning, Financial Aid and other services for the 64 SUNY Campuses. The past few years he has been focused on coordinating efforts to build and then migrate services to their new data center in Lackawanna. When he is not at work, Phil is a tabletop game designer, author, blogger, podcaster, and owner of a publishing company.
