Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) Introduction
Dave Nentarz, Cisco

Introduction into the Cisco UCS technology, a platform that combines compute, network, and virtualization. Important concepts, such as Service Profiles and Converged I/O will be discussed to help set the stage for the subsequent Oracle on Cisco UCS discussion.

Dave Nentarz is a Consulting Systems Engineer in Cisco Data Center Practice, focusing on Cisco's Unified Computing System. During Dave's 30+ years in IT, Dave has designed solutions for mission critical applications, with a focus on convergence, high availability and leveraging intelligence in the network. Dave joined Cisco in 1999 and has supported large Enterprise Accounts in the Northeast. Prior to joining Cisco - Dave held a consulting role at Digital Equipment / Compaq for 9 years, specializing in ERP applications, resilient network delivery and high performance, from Data Center to branch. Dave worked at Eastman Kodak prior to Digital Equipment, building fiber and digital network for voice and data, and scaling those networks from a metropolitan to global scale. Dave achieved CCIE #5167 in 1999.

Oracle on Cisco UCS

To the extent that the Oracle technologies that comprise the Oracle Grid (RAC, OEM, CRS & ASM) can deliver on the GRID promise they do so, but only within the realm of the Oracle software paradigm. To bring the Oracle Grid vision to fruition these Grid technologies need additional hardware and software functionality.

In this session we will discuss how Cisco’s UCS solves the fundamental business problem: How to implement Cloud Computing for mission critical Oracle applications in a cost effective, efficient and low risk manner?

Since Cisco’s introduction of the Unified Computing System, Oracle customers have dramatically reduced data center complexity while:
• Reducing Oracle deployment times from weeks to minutes
• Reducing Oracle licensing costs 30%-50%
• Providing linear scalability for Oracle RAC Cache Fusion, up to 8 nodes
• Lowering operating costs by up to 30%

Danny Dunn is an Oracle Architect with Cisco Systems. His area of expertise is architecting Oracle Cloud Ecosystems with Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS). This includes the sizing of tiered Oracle Application architectures incorporating both physical and virtual environments. Danny has been architecting RISC to x86 migrations for 8 years. Danny has 25 years of IT experience as a C programmer, UNIX System Administrator, Oracle DBA, Oracle Architect and IT Director. Danny has written numerous white papers and participated in numerous benchmarks. Most notably the Two Terabyte per Hour Veritas Oracle/NetBackup Benchmark world record set in 2002. Danny has architected/tuned Oracle RAC solutions globally for the past 10 years. Danny managed the Symantec/Oracle business and engineering relationship for three years. Danny has a Master’s of Science in Computer Systems Technology from Louisiana State University.

A Balanced Scorecard Approach using OBIEE
Dan Gerena, Exelis

A real-world case study in how to structure the BI team, architect the warehouse, develop the dashboards and implement successfully.

Dan Gerena was the Director of Business Intelligence & Analytics at Kaleida Health, for 13 years, and was responsible for building the BI team and defining the warehouse structure, as well as metadata management and toolset development and implementation. The Kaleida Health deployment has been written up in Oracle's "Profit" magazine, and Kaleida has hosted numerous site visits for other hospitals to demonstrate its BI capabilities.

Dan now works for Exelis, a Fortune 500 firm in the defense industry in Rochester, where he is tasked with building the BI team and capabilities from scratch. Dan also has developed a pre-packaged BI solution for healthcare providers using OBIEE, which he sells in a consulting role for Future Technologies, Inc.

Dan has an MBA from the University at Buffalo, is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, and has been a guest speaker at conferences, such as the TDWI Executive Conference.
