Getting it right the first time:
Architecting a highly-available, fast, and secure Oracle Deployment

Ron Carovano, F5 Networks

You’ve spend hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars developing and deploying Oracle solutions.  Upon deployment, you discover that many remote users are unable to use the application due to unacceptably slow network performance.  At the close of every financial quarter, your application slows to a crawl.  New security concerns are coming up faster than you can update the applications.  The complaints from your customers, partners, and co-workers are starting to mount.  Sound familiar?  Fortunately, there is a simple solution that can help you get things right the first time.  Come learn how the discipline of application delivery networking can provide an agile infrastructure to ensure your Oracle applications are always available, fast, and secure.

Ron Carovano is a Senior Business Development Manager with F5 Networks.  Responsible for the global alliance with Oracle, Ron oversees solution-development efforts conducted between F5 and Oracle. He is also responsible for aligning F5’s business programs with Oracles’s go-to-market initiatives.

Ron has 20 years experience in high-tech industries, ranging from medical device development, to health care simulation and education, to enterprise Application Delivery Networking. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.B.A. from the University of Florida, and is also listed as an inventor on 14 U.S. patents.

Solaris 11 Express

Post by sam »

Solaris 11 Express
Jeff Victor, Oracle

Oracle Solaris 11 Express helps Solaris maintain its leadership position among operating systems. It offers two major advances: a new packaging system and unique network virtualization features. Early forms of these features had been released during the previous three years in the OpenSolaris distros, but are now enterprise-ready, and Solaris 11 Express is fully supported by Oracle Corporation.

This overview will introduce the new features and place Solaris 11 Express in the context of modern data centers and other Oracle products.

Jeff Victor is the Principal Author of the book "Oracle Solaris 10 System Virtualization Essentials" and a Principal Sales Consultant at Oracle Corporation. Before 2010 Jeff worked for Sun Microsystems for 13 years.  His expertise in operating systems, virtualization and resource management, based on 25 years of Unix experience, is regularly requested by major corporations.  He is an OpenSolaris Zones Community Leader, the creator of the 'zonestat' open-source program, and a regular author, contributor and speaker at corporate and industry events.  His blog can be found at http://blogs.sun.com/JeffV. Jeff received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

Exadata Real world Experiences – Part 1 – Hardware
Bryan Grenn, Paychex & UNYOUG Technical Chair

This session will cover a history of the Exadata, followed by an in-depth look at the  options available with the current configurations ( 2-2 and 2-8 ).  Bryan will share his real world experiences when making these configuration decisions, and trying to implement an Exadata in a Datacenter.  He will also cover use cases for this type of platform, and what to keep in mind when benchmarking against your current configuration.  This is the first in a two-part series with the second part covering the software benefits incorporated into the Exadata platform.

Bryan Grenn is an infrastructure architect at Paychex, and is the Technical chair of UNYOUG.  He has been an Oracle DBA for over 20 years, consulting at many of Rochester's biggest companies.  Bryan has worked as a SA, webmaster, and storage engineer along with being a DBA.  He has experience on most common platforms (Windows, HPUX, AIX, Solaris, and Linux) including Exadata, and has worked with most database related features and technologies (RAC, compression, partitioning, Active Data Guard, RAT, OLAP, ODI, GoldenGate, OBIEE).  He also blogs, and Tweets in his spare time.

Supporting Your Off-shore Support

Supporting Your Off-shore Support
Mike Conklin, UNYOUG

Depending on off-shore database support requires on-site vigilance, conscious effort, and clear communications to ensure that our databases are receiving the attention they require for optimum performance.  Leverage our experience to optimize your support situation.  Learn to interact effectively with your off-site support team by asking the right questions, defining responsibilities, and applying your service level agreement.  Discover your options when your questions are not being answered in a timely fashion, when the off-site folks speak your language, but don’t seem to grasp your business or application needs or when you may need to exercise the dba privilege locally.

Mike has over 20 years of Oracle experience and currently works as a contractor/consultant.  Clients include Kodak, Xerox, Blue Choice, Johnson and Johnson, and ESPN.  Mike has given presentations at numerous conferences and will be presenting again at IOUG this April.  Other accomplishments  include being published in “Oracle Unleashed” by SAMS Publishing.  He has most recently participated in an Oracle Exadata POV.  Mike lives in Pavilion NY with his wife Pam of 36 years has 3 children and one grandson (pictures shown on request).
