Postby sam » Fri Sep 26, 2008 4:27 pm

CXtec’s Migration from Large SMP to Oracle RAC on Linux
Dean Bettinger, Storage Technology Business Development Manager, CXtec

Dean Bettinger guided CXtec’s migration from Oracle running on a Sun SMP server to an Oracle RAC Cluster running on Linux and the business case that drove that migration.  This presentation will draw from the published Case Study Forum paper describing how CXtec leveraged HP’s PolyServe Database Utility and commodity Intel x86 servers to realize $1M in cost savings and benefits.  Mr. Bettinger will also describe in detail CXtec’s Cisco InfiniBand high-speed interconnect and Compellent Storage Center SAN technologies.

Mr. Bettinger has 27 years of industry experience, particularly in the development of advanced information systems architectures. Over the last 11 years at CXtec he guided the following infrastructure initiatives: traditional fibre channel SAN, EqualLogic iSCSI SAN, Linux-based Oracle RAC cluster, storage virtualization, Cisco VoIP migration, and server virtualization. Mr. Bettinger was also involved in several major software development projects: internally developed da Vinci CRM, Oracle Applications 11i upgrade, and CXtec’s third generation equal2new® Information System shop floor automation system.

Mr. Bettinger received his B.S. and M.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University. He is an Adjunct Instructor at Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and has also taught Unix System Administration at SU’s Center for Business Information Technology where he serves on the CBIT Advisory Board. In 2002 Mr. Bettinger was named Syracuse’s Computer Professional of the Year by the ACM, Syracuse Chapter.

Lower Costs, Improve support, and deploy faster with Oracle Enterprise Linux & Oracle VM
John Devereaux, Solution Architect, Oracle Linux & Oracle VM, Oracle

Cut costs and improve support by consolidating under Oracle's Unbreakable Linux support program. The industries first "Enterprise" class support program for Linux provides support for RHEL & OEL with support options such as Premier backporting, comprehensive management, and extensive real world testing all at a significantly lower cost. Combined with Oracle's virtualization technology (Oracle VM) through Grid-based Virtualization, organizations can significantly reduce costs with faster deployments and consolidated management capabilities. Customers now have a single point of enterprise-class support for their entire virtualization environments, including the Linux operating system, Oracle Database, Fusion Middleware, and Application software.

Topics covered:
Oracle Enterprise Linux/Unbrekable Linux Support Overview
Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) Release Cycle & Distribution Comparison with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
Oracle VM Server Virtualization Technologies
Oracle Grid and Oracle Virtualization
Oracle VM 2.1.2 Technical Review
Oracle VM Architecture & System Design

John Devereaux worked as a Systems Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation on the DEC Unix / VMS Systems, at Compaq and Hewlett Packard as a Engineer working on the DEC Alpha Unix Systems, and at Redhat as the SME for Healthcare Vertical / Financial Vertical Markets. He served in the Military including Just Cause and Desert Storm.
