Real Application Testing (RAT) AKA Database Replay

Post by bgrenn »

All,
By now you have probably heard of this product that is part of 11g.  What you might not know is that the record (capture) piece of it was backported  to 10.2.0.4 .. You are probably asking yourself... Why do I care ??

Well, I found a great use for RAT capture, and testing a migration to 11g.  What I did was

1) Create an 11g, database, and use datapump to import in my 10g database.
2) Record the workload in 10g.
3) copy the workload files to 11g (where the database resides)
4) prepare the workoad
5) replay the workload
6) look at the reports

I was able to identify some sql that wasn't ANSI compliant and needed to be rewritten.

This is an Awesome tool, and from I can tell through my testing, it runs exactly as advertised.

Keep in mind that this is a separately priced option, but it is worth looking at the ROI on it.
