Infiniband coming to a town near you
As the Exadata takes off (I've heard it is REALLY taking off), more and more vendors are opening their eyes to the bottleneck of I/O. You are going to see some other solutions come to the market that are infiniband based. You are also going to see more solutions like the Storage Cell's.. Just look ...

Exadata ROCKS
I am starting to look at some Exadata number and they are unbelievable (especially with parallelization).
I will post some stuff (numbers/tests) as I get the approval to do so. This thing lives up the hype.

Well, I'm back again after another crazy 4 days. The biggest highlight of my visit was the unconference. I spent 2 sessions with Kevin Closson. The second session was mostly Oracle Oaktable members, so it was very insightful. Big announcements that Caught my eye. 1)Exadata 2-8 Faster, and much b...

Exadata drives
Did you know Sata drives are no longer available in the Exadata? just 2 levels of sas.. The HP (high performance) are about 25% faster than the HC (high capacity). According to Kevin Closson the sata drives were crashing about once a month. No one else seemed to realize this as part of the anounce...

Clone Db
Never heard of it ?? Well it is a new feature with 11.2.0.2. You can take your rman back, some nas storage, and open it up for write.. It creates new blocks on write on a NFS mounted device, but it is so cool !! Kind of like a flex clone. Netapp must be a little worried :) Here is a little more i...

Oracle Unconference
I've talked enough about this in other topics that I decided to make it a single topic. At oracle openworld there is an unconference.. The idea is, those who want to speak but weren't accepted for a formal presentation can give a presentation.. Here is a link to this years lineup http://wikis.sun.co...

Cardinality Feedback
Chances are you going "what is that" ? Cardinality feedback is a new feature with 11g.. If you haven't heard, a query can have multiple plans in 11g. The most common way this can happen is through the use of bind variables and histograms.. In 10g, there was only one plan. This was decided...

Openworld 2010
Anyone attending this year ? I've heard there aren't going to be as many Oracle people available to talk to.. I also noticed that kevin Closson isn't speaking, and he didn't even get into Oracle Develop.

things that make you go Huh ?
Another intersting note... Did you notice that with 11gr2 oracle once had flash cache memory for the SGA to support Exadata?? Did you notice it's not mentioned for the exadata anymore ?? They are using flashcache at the disk level instead. (It's write through cache by the way so it doesn't help wri...

nehalem VS amd shanghai
One of the items I did get a chance to test is AMD VS Intel for LIO's.. My test was to scan a table in memory 10,000 times, and average out the execution times.. Bottom line was that Nehalem did perform 35% faster than AMD shanghi for in memory lookups.. To me this is an important metric for the Exa...
